DEFINE MONTEREY

Over the past year, and into 2010, one of the Association and Board’s primary objectives is to carefully evaluate and refine of Monterey County’s unique branding platform in comparison to that of other leading wine regions.  “We’ve embarked on a year-long branding initiative to develop our defining positioning statement - in other words, what makes Monterey County truly unique," said Rhonda Motil, Executive Director of the Monterey Count Vintners & Growers Association.  "We’ve known for some time that our AVAs [American Viticulture Areas] possess unique qualities that enable us to produce exceptional wine.  In reassessing our position, the quest has been to define and articulate more compellingly attributes.” Motil continued, “I thank the 2009 MCVGA Board for their dedication over the past year to collaborate on this initiative.”

"We have a diverse and experienced board," adds 2010 President, James Pickworth. "We're now poised to spread the amazing brand story of Monterey to the media, trade and consumers."

GRAPE VALUES:

Monterey County’s winegrape values exceeded $238 million - a 49% value increase over the course of 5 years, according to Monterey’s most recent crop report.  In particular, Monterey's two most sought-after varietals - Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - continued to fetch impressively high prices.

Bringing together the talents and resources of its members, partners and the community, the MCVGA promotes and supports their leadership in the art, science and business of wine.  Founded in 1974, the Association is a non-profit organization representing over 75 vintners and growers in Monterey, California.  Additional details are available by visiting www.montereywines.org.
